Mary Elizabeth Hospital
Site Study
2023 - TAK Studio
The project aims to promote and explore what constitutes a good hospital environment.
The purpose of the project is to design a scalable collection of objects for MEH's Winter Gardens, providing space for movement, tranquility, conversations, and sensory experiences. Being hospitalized at MEH can involve various physical and mental situations. Therefore, the focus is on creating an object that does not dictate how it should be used but invites intuitive interaction from both adults and children.
To support a positive hospital experience, our emphasis is on bringing nature to those who cannot venture outside. By recreating the natural calmness and playfulness found in nature, along with forms and materials reminiscent of it, a positive impact on tranquility, connection, and intuitive play is achieved.
The objects are designed with inspiration from large stones in nature, found in groups or clusters along the water. A series of large, soft wooden stones are created to provide space for sensory experiences. The objects incorporate simple carvings that encourage tactile exploration with hands, stepping with feet, or visual examination. The objects will vary in size and placement, mirroring the diversity found in nature.
